The Carolina Panthers seem to have addressed a major need by agreeing to terms with tackle Matt Kalil.

The Carolina Panthers under Dave Gettleman are somewhat notorious for lack of activity in the free agent market on day one. Yesterday was no different, the Panthers signed nobody in the first few hours of free agency. There was more news to be made on Panthers players leaving the team than new Panthers appearing out of the ether.

The New Orleans Saints continued the trend of NFC South teams using each other to grab free agent help. The Saints signed linebacker A.J. Klein, the trusty backup linebacker to Luke Kuechly and Shaq Thompson, in order to give him a starter’s position. No real surprise there, but it was a surprise when the Saints went and signed Carolina Panthers free agent wide receiver Ted Ginn. It puts the Panthers very much in the receiver market all of the sudden.

The top of the receiver market disappeared on day one as well. Alshon Jeffrey, Torrey Smith, and DeSean Jackson were all scooped up early, making them unavailable to the Panthers. It will be interesting to see how the Panthers respond to this development.

More from Panthers Rumors

The silver lining was the announcement of reports from Adam Shefter of ESPN that the Panthers had agreed to terms with free agent left tackle Matt Kalil. Kalil is the brother of Panthers center Ryan Kalil and thought to be an obvious target. Kalil claims to be done with health problems and represents stability at the key left tackle position.

Getting a left tackle was key with the uncertain situation of Michael Oher and a weak tackle class in this year’s NFL Draft. The Panthers can thereby claim a good victory here while they continue to look for other ways to bolster the roster. The other tackle spot is still in question although Oher or Daryl Williams may move into that spot. Look for the Panthers to add another tackle or two depending on what they decide to do with Mike Remmers.
