UNC Loses Out on Coveted Transfer Portal Target
By Joe Summers
The North Carolina Tar Heels suffered some bad news on Sunday when coveted Rutgers transfer portal target Clifford Omoruyi committed to Alabama.
Omoruyi would have been a perfect fit at UNC, especially considering the limited depth the roster currently has in the frontcourt. The Tar Heels should have one of the best backcourts in the country on the news that reigning ACC Player of the Year RJ Davis was coming back, but they need to land a big man or two to prove they're legitimate championship contenders.
With Armando Bacot and Harrison Ingram both gone, UNC needs a big man who can offer exactly what Omoruyi does.
Rutgers Transfer Clifford Omoruyi Commits to Alabama Over UNC
Omoruyi averaged 10.4 points and 8.3 rebounds on 51.2% shooting in 2023, just one year after averaging 13.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game as one of the most consistent big men in the Big 10.
North Carolina is still considered one of the betting favorites to win the NCAA Tournament in the 2024-25 season, though Omoruyi certainly would have helped.
With Davis, Elliot Cadeau and Seth Trimble all returning, the Tar Heels will once again be one of the most competitive teams in the ACC with legitimate championship aspirations. Even still, head coach Hubert Davis should be active in the transfer portal over the next couple of months.
If the Tar Heels can land a big man to fill a role like Omoruyi, I'll feel a lot better about the program's chances overall. Fingers crossed UNC can land that final piece to the puzzle.
