RJ Davis Reportedly Decides on Tar Heels Future
By Cem Yolbulan
One of the biggest questions for North Carolina once the college basketball season was over was the future of their star guard RJ Davis. With one more year of eligibility left, what Davis was going to do was going to be a massive factor in the type of season the Tar Heels were going to have next season.
UNC fans are finally getting a better idea for their superstar's future. According to Matt Norlander of CBS Sports, the 2024 ACC Player of the Year is "on board to return" for another season.
UNC News: RJ Davis Likely Returning for Another Season
The news comes on the heels of Seth Trimble withdrawing from the transfer portal and Elliott Cadeau returning as well. This creates a formidable backcourt group in Chapel Hill for next season.
Davis had a breakout season in the 2023-24 campaign, averaging 21.2 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game while shooting almost 40% from three. He was a consensus first-team All-American and one of the best players in the country.
After this campaign, there were some discussions about Davis declaring for the 2024 NBA Draft. I'm sure Davis considered his options, looked at the draft landscape and his possible scenarios, and decided that the best option for him was to return to North Carolina. Unfortunately for him, the NBA can be a tough place for 6-foot shooting guards who would be 23 years old in their rookie seasons.
For college basketball, however, Davis is a bonafide star. He will likely start the season as one of the favorites to win the Wooden Award, now that Zach Edey is out of the picture. He also has a chance to become the all-time leading scorer for the Tar Heels. He is 784 points behind Tyler Hansbrough for first place, and another elite scoring season like he did last season could get him there.
