The Carolina Panthers were hit by the injury bug to start training camp, losing special teams ace Sam Franklin to a broken foot on Monday.

In addition to Franklin, Carolina has yet to activate veteran linebacker D.J. Wonnum and rookie running back Jonathon Brooks from the PUP list. These aren’t ideal injuries for the Panthers, who added a new member to the injured list for camp.

Mike Kaye of the Charlotte Observer reported on Tuesday that wide receiver Daewood Davis will be out for a couple of weeks with a thigh injury. Davis suffered the leg injury at Monday’s practice where he had to be carted off the field.

This is not ideal news for Davis, who signed with the Panthers in June after playing in the UFL with the Memphis Showboats in the spring. The former Western Kentucky standout was one of the best wideouts in the UFL, posting 41 receptions for 446 yards and five touchdowns.

The former UFL star has a tall task of trying to make the Panthers’ 53-man roster, given the amount of depth and talent Carolina has at the wide receiver spot. However, Davis has the speed to take the top off the defense, which the Panthers could use at the WR5/WR6 spots.

After seeing Franklin and Davis go down with injuries in a matter of days, Panthers head coach Dave Canales likely hopes the team can stay injury-free for the rest of training camp as they prepare for their first preseason game on Aug. 8 against the New England Patriots.
