Panthers Lose Special Teams Star to Devastating Injury in Training Camp
By Joe Summers
The Panthers' special teams unit suffered a big blow on Monday, losing versatile ace Sam Franklin to a broken foot that'll sideline him for a significant portion of the regular season.
Entering his fifth season with the organization, the veteran safety led the team in special teams snaps in each of the last two years, emerging as a bright spot for a team lacking many. Franklin had a career-high 30 tackles in four starts in the secondary last year, suggesting he was in line for an expanded role on the defense as well.
Head coach Dave Canales told reporters he expects Franklin back this season, though it's a significant loss regardless.
Panthers News: Special Teams Ace Sam Franklin Suffers Broken Foot
Originally an undrafted free agent out of Temple, Franklin worked his way into becoming a trusted and valuable part of the roster. With the franchise desperate to fix the woes that caused last year's 2-15 result, his loss looms large.
"He's one of my guys," Canales said in his presser, noting that "you can't replace Sam Franklin." Unfortunately, they'll have to try regardless.
The injury comes at a terrible time for Franklin as well. He's only on a one-year deal, hoping to prove his value to earn a long-term extension with the only NFL team he's ever known. Based on Canales' comments, the first-year coach certainly wants Franklin to stick around beyond this season, but this ailment could complicate matters.
This is now an opportunity for other players to pick up the slack. Franklin will be sorrowfully missed, yet the special teams and defensive units could be stronger for it in the end if other guys showcase improvement.
Carolina wishes for a speedy recovery and Panthers fans look forward to seeing Franklin's jubilant personality back on the sidelines soon.
