Panthers' Recent Success Just Cost Another Person Their Job in NFL
By Jovan Alford
The Carolina Panthers entered the Week 11 bye on a high note after defeating the New York Giants 20-17 in overtime. It was a huge win for the Panthers as they have a two-game winning streak, which they haven’t done since the beginning of the 2021 season when they started 3-0.
While things are improving in Carolina, their opponent (the Giants) is in disarray heading into Week 12. The Giants are sitting in the basement of the NFC East with a 2-8 record and look to be in the running for a top-5 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
With that option becoming a reality, the Giants shockingly decided to bench starting QB Daniel Jones. On Tuesday, Giants head coach Brian Daboll announced that second-year QB Tommy DeVito is replacing Jones.
The second-year quarterback appeared in nine games (started in six) last season for the Giants. As for Jones, he didn’t play well in the Giants’ Week 10 loss against the Panthers in Munich, Germany. This comes on the heels of the New Orleans Saints firing their then-head coach, Dennis Allen, after Carolina defeated them in Week 9.
The Panthers’ defense made life hard for Jones as he completed 59.4 percent of his passes for 190 yards and two interceptions. Jones had a rushing touchdown, but Carolina’s defense had two sacks.
With Jones getting benched for DeVito and the Giants’ current record, we’ve likely seen the former Duke quarterback play his last snaps in the Big Apple. Jones has a potential out in his contract in 2025, per Spotrac.com.
In the offseason, the Giants will likely explore what to do with Jones whether that’s a trade or a release, which could have financial implications.
