After getting crushed last week on the road by the Denver Broncos led by former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton, the Carolina Panthers returned home on Sunday to play the Saints.

Despite both teams struggling this season, the Panthers came into the game as the underdogs. But Carolina showed that they were the better team on Sunday, defeating the Saints 23-22. A couple of Saints players took the loss hard and voiced their frustrations on social media,

It was a demoralizing result for the Saints, who lost their seventh consecutive game and cost Dennis Allen his job. According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Saints fired Allen after spending two-plus seasons as the head coach.

As bad as things have gone for the Panthers this season, it’s been worse for the Saints, who jumped out to a 2-0 start after impressive wins over Carolina and the Dallas Cowboys.

The Saints were expected to compete for the NFC South crown but between poor play and injuries, New Orleans struggled to live up to expectations, which fell on the head coach.

New Orleans throttled Carolina in Week 1 at Caesars Superdome, 47-10, dominating them on both sides of the ball. However, the Panthers got their revenge as veteran running back Chuba Hubbard scored the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

It will be interesting to see who becomes the Saints' interim coach as the Panthers pulled one of the bigger upsets in Week 9.
