Panthers Admit Mistake by Cutting Recent Draft Bust
By Cem Yolbulan
Panthers fans are, unfortunately, too used to parting ways with draft picks rather quickly. Roster mismanagement and talent misevaluation have forced Carolina to move on from their young players quicker than other NFL teams. General manager Dan Morgan has been dealing with that ever since taking over in the 2024 offseason.
Carolina had five picks in the 2023 NFL Draft. They used them on Bryce Young, Jonathan Mingo, DJ Johnson, Chandler Zavala, and Jammie Robinson. Young's story in the NFL is still being written, Mingo is already gone, and Johnson and Zavala have been a mixed bag.
On Friday, Carolina decided to part ways with the fifth-round pick Jammie Robinson, per Panthers insider Sheena Quick. They activated safety Nick Scott from the injured reserve list to replace him on the 53-man roster.
NFL News: Panthers Waive 2023 Draft Pick Jammie Robinson
This is a disappointing development for the once-promising defender. Robinson was an intriguing ballhawk as a college prospect, recording seven interceptions in 47 games between South Carolina and Florida State.
Despite a dire need for more defensive playmaking for the Panthers, Robinson failed to crack the rotation. In two seasons, he appeared in 21 games for the team but only played in 75 defensive snaps. Most of his action came on special teams, with 366 snaps.
Robinson will now try to find a new NFL home to establish his career. He will likely get a chance on a practice squad sooner rather than later due to his age and potential.
The Panthers, on the other hand, will continue to look for a long-term solution in the backfield. Xavier Woods has been solid for the Panthers, but the rest of the safety rotation, including offseason addition Jordan Fuller and now-active Nick Scott, has been disappointing.
