Failed Panthers QB Suddenly Signs With NFC Laughingstock
By Jovan Alford
Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Will Grier has found another opportunity after the Philadelphia Eagles released him last week. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Grier was signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.
After beginning his career in Carolina, Grier spent the 2021 and ‘22 seasons with the Cowboys. The Panthers waived the veteran quarterback in Sept. 2021, but he landed in Dallas and was placed on injured reserve in Jan. 2022.
Grier didn’t see any regular season action with the Cowboys as he exclusively played in the preseason. The former Panthers quarterback had a so-so 2022 preseason, completing 56.2 percent of his passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns.
However, Grier’s 2023 preseason stint with Dallas was phenomenal. The veteran signal-caller completed 76.2 percent of his passes for 640 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. He also had two rushing touchdowns.
Despite his tremendous play that summer, the Cowboys released him as they had a new QB3 in Trey Lance, who they acquired in a trade from the San Francisco 49ers. Grier would eventually join several teams, including the Eagles this offseason.
It’s not surprising the Cowboys brought Grier back as they need extra quarterback depth with starter Dak Prescott likely out for the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury.
Dallas hopes Grier doesn’t have to play the rest of this season. The last time he played in a regular season game was in Week 17 of the 2019 season in Carolina.
