Former Panthers WR Terrace Marshall Jr. was officially released by the 49ers on Tuesday, marking another disappointment for the 2021 second-round pick out of LSU.

Marshall joined San Francisco in August after being cut by Carolina, though never played a game with the team. He could find himself on another practice squad with a number of injuries and trades going on across the league, yet it's a discouraging sign nonetheless for a talented player.

In three years with the Panthers, Marshall appeared in 36 games and caught 64 passes for 767 yards and one TD. It's unlikely he'll immediately find another job on an active roster but a number of teams could see potential in the playmaker.

The six-foot-two, 200 pound outside threat became an odd man out in Carolina after the team acquired Diontae Johnson and drafted Xavier Legette. Given the way the Panthers have flamed out this season, perhaps he could get another chance with his old team.

He was phenomenal in 2020 with the LSU Tigers. In only seven games, Marshall caught 48 passes for 731 yards and 10 TDs after scoring 13 TDs the prior year.

Always a threat in the red zone, it's surprising to see his NFL career fizzle out so quickly. A large chunk of the problem was being drafted by Carolina in the first place, a sad but true tale for many players chosen by miserable franchises incapable of developing them.

There is reason for optimism for the Panthers moving forward. Legette looks like a legitimate player and we'll soon see Jonathon Brooks on the field as well. Here's hoping those players are able to develop better than Marshall has to this point.
