Former Panthers Draft Bust Joins NFC Contender After Roster Cutdown Day
By Jovan Alford
The Carolina Panthers surprisingly released former second-round pick wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. on Tuesday before the 4 pm ET roster deadline.
Marshall had a good summer and was on the verge of making the 53-man roster. The former LSU wideout recorded five receptions for 53 yards and a touchdown in the preseason. His lone TD came in the Panthers’ preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.
Panthers fans wished it worked out in Carolina for Marshall, but he’ll try to reinvent himself with an NFC contender this season.
Panthers News: Terrace Marshall Jr. Signs With San Francisco 49ers
Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz reported on Wednesday that the young wide receiver is signing with the San Francisco 49ers. Aaron Wilson of KPRC-2 adds Marshall will be on San Francisco’s practice squad.
That said, this could be a good opportunity for the 24-year-old wideout to get a fresh start with a new team that has talented skill-position players to learn from. Marshall might see some playing time here and there in San Francisco, but it won’t be the same as it was in Carolina.
Marshall would have been WR4 or WR5 in Carolina behind Diontae Johnson, Xavier Legette, Adam Thielen, and Jonathan Mingo this season.
Last year, Marshall requested a trade out of Carolina, but no team wanted to trade for him. He had 19 receptions (33 targets) for 139 yards in nine games. Panthers fans will be keeping an eye on the young receiver to see if he can make an impact with his new team.
