The Charlotte Hornets agreed to a training camp deal with former Virginia Cavalier Isaiah Wilkins over the weekend.

The Charlotte Hornets hope they can find a diamond in the rough with the signing of Isaiah Wilkins on Saturday, according to Michael Scotto of The Athletic.

Wilkins, 6’7″ and 227 forward, earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors as a member of the Virginia Cavaliers and finished averaging 6 points, 6.2 rebounds, 1.4 blocks and 1.2 steals per game last year. He has been a key part of this Cavaliers team, averaging over 26 minutes per game the past two seasons.

Even though he is an excellent defender, he went undrafted in last month’s NBA Draft.

According to Streaking the Lawn, Wilkins worked out for the Atlanta Hawks and Charlotte Hornets prior to the Draft. However, after the NBA Draft, he signed with the Houston Rockets Summer League team. The Rockets removed Wilkins from their roster prior to the Summer League and the reason was never known why, according to Mark Berman of FOX 26.

It would seem unlikely that Wilkins would be able to earn a spot on the Hornets roster. Wilkins though is the type of player that every successful team has. He is the type of player that will do all the small things that sometimes go unnoticed. He will play tough defense, rebound and can set the tone coming off the bench.

If Wilkins has a strong performance in camp, he will likely spend his time this year in the G-League. During that time his focus should be on the offensive end of his game. If he can fine tune that part of his game, he could find himself being added at some point during the season if the Hornets need depth due to injuries.
