The connection between Charlotte Hornets’ Kemba Walker and the New York Knicks seemingly has grown stronger as he has inched closer to free agency. However, according to Walker, he doesn’t seem himself in New York anytime soon.

Prior to joining the Charlotte Hornets, there has always been a connection between Kemba Walker and New York City. He was born in the Bronx and played his high school basketball at Rice High School in Harlem.

When it was time for college he didn’t go far, joining the UConn Huskies. He capped off his collegiate career with a National Championship in 2011. However, one of his fondest memories from that season was the run he had at the Big East Tournament in his hometown Madison Square Garden.

He led the Huskies to five wins, four over ranked opponents, including a game winner over Pittsburgh. He went on to be named the tournament MVP and talked about what it meant to play at MSG.

"“For me it was special, because I’m at home, playing in front of the greatest fans in the world,” the native of the Bronx said. “My family, my friends. Words can’t even describe it.”"

It shouldn’t have come as surprise than when Walker was linked to the Knicks, a team likely to have plenty of cap space next offseason to spend on the guard. However, the two-time All-Star may have put those rumors to rest before they really started. According to Michael Scotto of The Athletic:

"“As far as seeing me in New York, I doubt it,” Walker replied. “I’m a Hornet, and I plan on being a Hornet for a long time, so, yeah, I’m not sure about that (New York).”"

This certainly would be music to the ears of Michael Jordan and Mitch Kupchak. Walker has been a key figure on this Hornets team and it wouldn’t be easy to see him leave. While it would likely be close to a max deal, this team is not far from contention in a weak Eastern Conference.

However, it also isn’t a surprise for Walker to say this at this time. He does have one more year left on his contract and if he gave the impression he was looking for the exit, it could be an awkward year in the locker room.

The proverbial ball is now in the Charlotte Hornets’ court as they should try to finalize a long-term deal, sooner rather than later if Walker’s intentions are to remain in Charlotte.
