Doeren and the Wolfpack finished the 2017 regular season with eight wins and a chance for a ninth when the FBS Committee announces this year’s bowl games. NC State’s season looked promising for the future in some people’s eyes yet underachieving in others.

The benefit to Doeren’s success this year is that he received an automatic contract extension with his win over North Carolina. The stipulations of his contract, as it stands now, can be found here. However, Yow and Doeren appear to be at a standstill at negotiations for a restructured contract. This opens the door for Doeren to explore other opportunities, Tennessee included.

The Wolfpack and Volunteer fanbases have gone onto social media to voice their concerns. Some following the Pack have wanted Doeren gone. Others, fearing another 2013-esque season, want Doeren to continue his progression. The Tennessee fans are also split between wanting Doeren’s upward trend to benefit the school in Knoxville and completely refusing to accept Doeren as the head coach.

Whatever the case may be, Doeren has shown promise as a head coach. After lifting the Wolfpack out of the doldrums following O’Brien’s forced departure, his leadership trends toward that of success. Whether he coaches in Carter-Finley Stadium or Neyland Stadium, the team with Doeren at the helm looks to challenge its divisional competition for seasons to come.
