Carolina Panthers: Four Trading Down Scenarios
As a final look at trading let’s look at how the Panthers could achieve the 2008 result of getting both a running back and a tackle in the first round. We’re going to target McCaffrey and Ramcyzk here. We know that the 12th pick is the safest bet for McCaffrey and that Ramczyk starts coming off the board around number twenty.
So the first thing to do is to target the 12th pick. Let’s do the Cleveland trade mentioned above.
Panthers picks before: 8, 40, 64, 98, 115, 152, 192, 233
After Cleveland trade: 12, 40, 52, 64, 175, 192, 233

Now the Panthers draft McCaffrey at twelve. However they need to move back into the first round to grab Ramczyk at say 19 (Tampa) or 18 (Tennessee). The mid-draft has been hollowed out, but there are three second round picks at our disposal in a pretty deep draft.
Let’s target Tampa’s 19th pick under the assumption that depth means more to them than any one player at this point. That pick is worth 875 points.
The Panthers could make a package of No. 40 (500) and No. 52 (380) and be right there just five points over. You can decide if you want to get in the weeds to get a swap of sixth or seventh round picks to make that work. Let’s just trade the two seconds, get back into the first round and take Ramczyk at twenty. The Panthers would still have a second round pick at 64 and three late round selections.
The Panthers have some trading down scenarios that make pretty good sense for the team, assuming the other teams in these scenarios want to play ball. As we saw in the last instance, there is also a chance that Panthers will do a combination of moves to get the players they want.
