33. The 1976 Peach Bowl

The Peach Bowl is an attractive spot for Tar Heel bowl goers. It is located in Atlanta and is not too far away from North Carolina to deter bowl goers. The Bowl also traditionally matches teams from the ACC and the SEC, which means that the Heels are normally facing a nationally known opponent when they go there.

However the 1976 incarnation of the game is probably one that most Tar Heel fans would rather forget. After all the Tar Heels scored exactly no points in this game against the Kentucky Wildcats. Bill Dooley led his team to a 9-2 record during the season and was midranked throughout the year. The team was even number 19 in the AP going into the game.

Dooley was responsible for the spell of Tar Heel football that led to the school producing a string of 1,000 yard rushers. He could not find an answer against 7-4 Kentucky that day. It did not help that the Tar Heels gave up the ball five times in the game.

Turnovers turned a 0-0 halftime score into a 21-0 shutout. It could have been worse too if Kentucky had not been stopped twice in the red zone without scoring.
