North Carolina Tar Heels: Looking Back at 33 Bowl Games

31. The 1983 Peach Bowl

It would almost ten more years before Florida State would join the ACC under Coach Bobby Bowden, so they were perfectly available to play the Tar Heels in the 1983 version of the Peach Bowl as an Independent.

North Carolina was at the end of a streak of bowls that had seen the victorious in four straight contests. That streak would end against FSU and in a way not unfamiliar to later Tar Heel fans who saw the 1990s Bowden teams in conference. The Tar Heels were stopped from running the ball, their forte, completely. As a result the Heels had only a field to show for their efforts.

The Seminoles on the other hand had no trouble running the ball that day as they rattled of 265 rushing yards of their own. This was despite having a quarterback, Eric Thomas, in his first game as a starter. Thomas would gain the MVP trophy but All-American back Greg Allen provided more punch.

Really the star of the Peach Bowl that year was the Florida State defense. They completely shut down a Dick Crum offense that had no problem collecting yards normally.
