East Carolina Pirates: Zay Jones on a 2nd Team All-America List
The East Carolina Pirates got one member on the CBS Sports All-America 2nd Team.
The career of East Carolina Pirates wide receiver Zay Jones has come to an end. He ended up with more catches than any other receiver in the history of college football. Unfortunately the team around him could not get to a bowl game.
A second disappointment was the Biletnikoff Award. While Jones had arguably the most intensive season of any wide receiver ever, the Heisman committee invited Oklahoma’s Dede Westbrook to its final five. That left no surprise when Westbrook then took the Biletnikoff over Jones. Even from his Oklahoma office Lincoln Riley still effects East Carolina.
Enough of disappointments, this is the season of good times and smiles. Jones was put on the 2nd team All-America list by CBS Sports. This shows that his accomplishments have not been totally dismissed by the people in love with bigger name schools. On that list Jones can find solace with the likes of Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey, A&M’s Myles Garrett, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, and Clemson’s Jordan Leggett.

Now the next step is the NFL. His case might have been helped this past weekend when Justin Hardy pulled together a good game against the Rams. Jones will have to fight off the small school and system product rap the whole way. Fortunately the best receiver in the NFL right now is Antonio Brown. The Pittsburgh Steeler is 5’10” and went to Central Michigan. Jones is three inches taller so that is a start.
It will also be interesting to see how the Pirates are going to recruit now. Will they continue to bring in receivers for a more spread based attack? Or will they slowly adjust to something more like Scottie Montgomery was used to at Duke? Either way they will miss Jones, who did almost everything for them this year.
