The Duke Blue Devils made into the top 20% of the FanSided Fandom 250

Everytime it seems there is no escaping the Duke Blue Devils. Here they are again in top fifty fandoms in the FanSided Fandom 250. That is really no surprise considering the reputation of the Cameron Crazies, because that is what this is about. It is about Krzyzewskiville and the great success of Duke basketball over the last nearing forty years.

It may once have been about Duke football. That would take you back to the days of the 1940s when Duke hosted the only Rose Bowl played outside Pasadena. Duke was relevant again in the late eighties but really is only now tapping into good football once more. The quarterback whisperer David Cutcliffe has presided over a new high point, taking Johnny Football to the limit in the Peach Bowl some years ago.

It is Coach K though that centers the energy. He sits as the NCAA’s all time winningest coach and he broke 1,000 wins. When he is done the bar may be set too high for anyone to match him. He has five championships. Two with the great group of the early nineties, one with Jay Williams, one with the crew around John Scheyer, and the last one with the super freshmen trio of Jahlil Okafor, Justise Winslow, and Tyus Jones.

That is the reason tickets are so prized. You can only fit about 7,000 people in Cameron after all and there is no air conditioning.

Duke can also be measured by its rivalries. There is the big rivalry with North Carolina that has become iconic in sport. They also have had rivalries with Kentucky, Michigan, and Maryland. It is the Maryland rivalry that was the great loss since Gary Williams seemed to build his teams with the idea of beating Duke.

There is little else to say that has not been said about the little private school in Durham that is somehow both David and Goliath.
