Wake Forest Demon Deacons: Grabbing Bowl Eligibility Tomorrow?
If the Wake Forest Demon Deacons wish to gain bowl eligibility, one of their two best chances is this weekend.
The Wake Forest Demon Deacons might have some good folks playing pro basketball, but they still have unresolved issues this football season. After their fifth victory of the season over Syracuse, the Deacs have been denied twice in their mission to get bowl eligible. While the loss to Florida State was no surprise, the loss to Army is a little concerning for a team needing those kind of games.
This week Wake Forest gets another chance to get bowl eligibility. The opponent is Virginia, a team who is probably the polar opposite in design from what Army tries to do. While any non-option team would be a welcome change, the Cavaliers will test the outside coverage of the Deacs defense.
The big problem for the Deacs will be if the opposition decides to go into a scoring contest. Wake has not had a lot of luck in those kinds of games unless they grab some turnovers like in the Indiana game. Their best chance to win games remains having the defense suppress the opposing score.

The offense cannot give Virginia extra chances to score. John Wolford still owns three more interceptions than touchdown passes. Wolford has more running scores than passing scores right now as well.
The Cavaliers also have a weapon to stretch defenses. Taquan Mizzell is not just a running back but he is also a key receiver in the passing game. It is important to not just cover the spread formations but keep an eye open for what will happen in the backfield.
If the Deacs fail to beat the Cavaliers there are still opportunities this season to close the deal. Boston College has only one conference win this season and they await in the season finale. That means the Deacs should be in bowl well before their 2020 Charlotte game with Notre Dame.
