The Appalachian State Mountaineers maintained their first place standing in the Sun Belt Conference with a win over the Eagles.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers continue to make noise in the Sun Belt Conference. This time it was against old rival Georgia Southern on Thursday Night. The two former Southern Conference powers have been majorly influential in their first three years in the conference and last night marked perhaps the most important game left on App’s schedule.

Georgia Southern came into the game with the more polished two year resume. They won the conference in their first year of membership. They also got two coaches promoted to bigger jobs. They did this all while running a run-heavy option kind of offense.

Year 3 has been different. Time and transition seem to be catching up to the Eagles and the result is 4-4 record with a decisive loss to the Mountaineers 34-10. The App State defense held the Eagles to just 159 yards of offense. Eagles stars of yesteryear like Matt Breida and Kevin Ellison were stymied in their attempt to repeat past greatness.

The game also wasn’t pretty from a turnover perspective. Taylor Lamb threw two picks for the Mountaineers while Ellison and Seth Shuman combined for three picks of their own.

Fortunately Lamb did not have to throw it that much. Jalin Moore had 126 yards of rushing offense while the always dependable Marcus Cox had 115 of his own. Each had a touchdown. Lamb nearly had a one hundred yard day of his own, but had two scores on the ground. Shaedon Meadors ate up most of the passing yards.

The Eagles scored the game’s first ten points, but the Mountaineers scored the next 34 and dominated the game’s final three quarters.

The Mountaineers face Texas State in Boone next week. This is the first meeting between the two schools as Sun Belt members. The Bobcats are 2-5. Troy is the only other team with a winning record left on App’s schedule.
