Top 5 college football teams in NC entering Week 10:

1. Appalachian State Mountaineers (7-0)

App continued their quest to an undefeated season by throttling South Alabama 30-3 last week. They are now 7-0 and ranked 20th in the nation. The only game that has been within one possession is their win at UNC 34-31. They have been able to control all of their games so far by avoiding critical mistakes. It’s not completely clear if they are better than Wake at this point, but it’s hard to argue with undefeated.

2. Wake Forest Demon Deacons (6-1)

Wake has had an unbelievable start to the season thus far, minus a down game at home against Louisville. Without that three-point loss, the Deacs are probably ranked in the top 15 and looking at a legit shot of winning the ACC. Coach Clawson and this football team really know how to pull out a win in tight games, with four of their six wins by one possession. They will need to be on top of their game Saturday as the Wolfpack come to town looking for the upset.

3. North Carolina Tar Heels (4-4)

UNC has made great improvement in year one of the Mack Brown era. Three of their four losses are to teams that are currently ranked, with the fourth being at Virginia Tech in the sixth overtime. With a statement win over Duke last week, they will just need to beat one of the final three FBS teams to reach bowl eligibility.

4. Duke Blue Devils (4-4)

With the loss at UNC Saturday, Duke continued their roller coaster of a season. Outside of the dominating win at Virginia Tech, the Devils haven’t been able to beat any impressive opponents. Their next best win is at home against Georgia Tech.  They will have this week off and will be preparing for their match-up with Notre Dame next Saturday in Durham.

5. NC State Wolfpack (4-3)

Like Duke, NC State hasn’t been able to win against the tougher competition. They are undefeated at home, but winless on the road. Coming off of a bye, we will see if Dave Doeren has been able to figure out anything at the quarterback position. If so, they could have a shot to make a statement win in Winston-Salem on Saturday.
