Charlotte Hornets: Ship Troy Daniels to Grizzlies
The Charlotte Hornets have made a sign and trade deal with the Memphis Grizzlies regarding their guard Troy Daniels.
The Charlotte Hornets are not quite done with their off season after all. Did you think that the team could retain Troy Daniels on a $1.2 million dollar one year deal?
Evidently we shouldn’t have. The Memphis Grizzlies signed Daniels to an offer sheet for a three year ten million dollar deal according to reports from Adrian Wojnarowski of the Vertical.
Before you are concerned that the Hornets just lost another shooter for nothing, the Hornets did manage to negotiate a sign and trade deal resulting in a trade exception of about $1.6 million dollars.

The way that works is that Daniels’ new deal would have paid him around $2.8 million the first year. The Hornets could not get credit for their tender, so that left $1.6 million to be settled a trade exemption.

The result for the Hornets is more cash savings. They saved $1.2 million from Daniels’ tender and now have an additional $1.6 million to throw into a trade. The Hornets will likely look for a wing (probably a small forward) to fill the spot Daniels opened up. Off the top of my head I think Tayshaun Prince might be available.
If the Hornets are still committed to a trade with either Spencer Hawes or Jeremy Lamb then they have a $1.6 million more to make numbers work. The chance that it is Lamb involved in the trade would seem to have decreased since Daniels was a three point shooting wing. He would have been the logical guy to replace Lamb behind Marco Belinelli if the team had traded Lamb.

The Hornets have about three roster spots to play with at this point. Other than perhaps finding another more defensive minded small forward, the Hornets will likely fill those spots with minimum contract players and try to save whatever flexibility they can for a possible in-season trade to respond to injuries or just get more competitive.
