The Charlotte Hornets finally signed their backup point guard and he bears the familiar face of Ramon Sessions.

The Charlotte Hornets had about ten million dollars and two holes to address once they had reached an agreement with Marvin Williams. Those holes were a backup point guard and some sort of rim protection. The Hornets answered one of those issues yesterday when they reached an agreement with Ramon Sessions.

Sessions will sign for a two year twelve and a half million dollar deal according to reports from Adrian Wojnarowski of the Vertical. He returns to Charlotte for his second stint on the team that he previously knew as the Bobcats.

Sessions was in Washington last season and saw some big minutes late in the year when John Wall was hurt and the team fell out of playoff contention. That resulted in Sessions making comments like he wanted to go somewhere where he had a chance to start. With Kemba Walker in place, that would not naturally seem like Charlotte.

Instead we need to remember who Sessions is replacing. That would be Jeremy Lin. Lin had a role as the backup point guard, but he also had a place in smaller lineups where Nicolas Batum became the small forward in the absence of Michael Kidd-Gilchrist. That combined role led to some pretty good minutes for Lin and so Sessions may believe that he too will have those opportunities.

Sessions does have one similarity with Lin. Both players are fearless in driving toward the basket. Sessions is routinely in the most-fouled players in the league stat. That means the Hornets will be able to keep the attacking nature Lin brought to the game.

The big difference though is that Sessions is about 32% from the three point line for his career. That is just south of where you want a three point percentage to be to make the shot worthwhile (34%). This means defenses will be able to play looser on Sessions to offer help elsewhere if he has the ball.

Still, the Hornets needed to make a move and it was either Sessions or the recovering from torn ACL Jarrett Jack. The team did the right thing.
