Duke Blue Devils: Colangelo wants K in 2020
Duke Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski is USA Basketball head Jerry Colangelo’s pick to takeover the operations of the national team when Colangelo leaves the post in 2020.
Have you tried to figure what exactly Duke Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski will do when he retires? Head of USA Basketball Jerry Colangelo has an idea. He wants Coach K to take over him when he steps as head of USA Basketball around 2020. This rates as wishful thinking by Colangelo at best.
Colangelo’s idea is to mentor Krzyzewski into the role for the next four years since Coach K will be stepping down as the head coach of the team in 2016 after the Olympics according to reports by Andy Katz of ESPN. Then Colangelo could turn the team over to K and everything would be hunky dory.
Except that the 69 year old Krzyzewski is trying to lesson his work load and not add to it. Krzyzewski wanted to leave the USA coaching position to spend more time with Duke and his family. He did not do it to take an internship under Colangelo during the same period of time.

Nobody knows how many years K has left as a head coach. His opponent Dean Smith got out at 65. On the other hand Larry Brown continues to coach in his mid-seventies. No one is going to push Krzyzewski out either. The special assistant to the Duke Chancellor will get to choose the moment of his own exit.
That may not be 2020 when Colangelo exits USA Basketball. It might not even be what Krzyzewski wants to do with his retirement years anyway. He has been around the USA National Team since the Dream Team. He has done more than his share to see that the USA Team remains the best in the world. Shouldn’t it be someone else’s turn?

Meanwhile the US Olympic team has seen about twelve players back out of the pool due to injuries so this team may be Coach K’s most difficult coaching job yet at the international level.
