Carolina Panthers: Is the Secondary Set?
Carolina Panthers Rookie Camp indicates that the Panthers are moving on with their current personnel in the secondary.
If there is any lesson to learn from the Carolina Panthers’ rookie camp, then it is that the Panthers are happy to go status quo with their secondary moving forward. If there are answers to be found then they are already on the roster. They will have to come from the three rookie cornerbacks and also from Tre Boston.
The first decision that the Panthers made in their rookie camp was to turn Jeremy Cash into a linebacker. He was the highest profile ‘safety’ that the Panthers had brought in in the off season. That means that the Panthers’ safety contingent is set with Kurt Coleman, Tre Boston, Colin Jones, and free agent signee Trenton Robinson.
That just means that the Panthers are comfortable moving forward with Boston. Boston was the starter at the end of the 2014 season before the Panthers brought in Coleman the next off season. As a long time watcher of Tar Heel football, the concern with Boston is not speed but consistent coverage.

The three Panthers rookie corners are also going to be the answer for at least the other starting corner spot. Robert McClain is not the answer for any real length of time. The only question is who of the three will emerge.
If jersey numbers were the only indication then James Bradberry is the leader in the clubhouse. He took Josh Norman’s number of 24. Bradberry is another cornerback from a smaller school. Although he was not a fifth round pick, donning Norman’s number is a symbolic hint toward his eventual successor.
Nothing was decided in rookie camp. Coach Ron Rivera pointed toward July training camp in Wofford as the true trial for Bradberry, Daryl Worley, and Zack Sanchez. The team does have more information on its young trio as it moves forward.
