The Wake Forest Demon Deacons did get two players onto NFL pre-training camp rosters from the 2016 class.

The hopes of Wake Forest Demon Deacons fans are probably not on the gridiron this month. Instead the Wake Forest faithful will be eyeing the NBA Playoffs where Tim Duncan, James Johnson, and Al-Farouq Aminu are still active and capable of building on the basketball legacy of the school.

However it would be remiss to completely ignore the footballers who are looking to start their NFL careers by being undrafted free agents. The Deacons shared the same fate as rivals Duke and North Carolina when nobody got drafted in the NFL Draft.

Also like the Blue Devils and Tar Heels, Deacons are finding their way onto NFL rosters and the chance to make big impacts in the NFL.

The players who have currently signed deals are:

Oakland Raiders

WR – K.J. Brent

Los Angeles Rams

LB – Brandon Chubb

It is a short list and it involves teams that either do or did play in the city of Los Angeles.

Brent becomes part of the Raiders’ search for more targets for quarterback Derek Carr to throw the ball to. This is the same team that signed Duke’s Max McCaffrey as well. Brent’s best feature is his height. He is 6’4” and managed 583 receiving yards last year despite being part of an anemic offense. It will be interesting to see what having a real quarterback behind a real offensive line will do for him.

Chubb has always been a favorite if somewhat short linebacker. The Rams make perfect sense for him. First, they are an established defense and he can work his way up.

Second, this is the franchise that made London Fletcher a household name with a similar physical flaw. Of course maybe I just have a soft spot for mouse-sized linebackers (Sam Mills).

The Demon Deacons will be entering important territory in year three of Dave Clawson. Now the recruiting should begin to show itself or perhaps Clawson will be doomed at the end of the season. There will also be a leadership gap to fill with the loss of Chubb.
