The Wake Forest Demon Deacons may field best Tobacco Road starting five in the playoffs.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons do not have the most players in the NBA Playoffs from a single school. Yet they are in the top ten in that category and have five players active right now. That means that they could at least field a team on the court that could scare the other teams. In fact perhaps quality would trump quantity in this case.

With Wake having only five guys, there is no need to try to sort them out and figure out who the starters are. They all have to play and they have no choice in the matter. The following players will be on the court whether they like it or not…

C/F Tim Duncan

PG Chris Paul

F Al-Farouq Aminu

F James Johnson

G Jeff Teague

For not having much to work with, the Demon Deacons do have some solid options. Obviously the team would orient around Paul and Duncan, but Aminu offers a solid defensive role player and a lob target. Johnson also offers some athleticism and this would be a long team with Aminu or Johnson forced into the three spot.

That would turn Teague into the silent killer on this team. Teams would most likely not prioritize the guard in their defensive schemes, instead focusing on Paul or Duncan. That could set up Teague for good open looks.

The other thing to note is just how hard a defense this would be to crack. You have the league’s best on ball defender (Paul) and if you pass it, Aminu could fill the lanes. Duncan is a savvy defender in the post as well.

So now we have three teams, Carolina, Duke, and Wake with teams that can see the court. Who wins? That will be the next task of the NBA Playoff teams from the Tobacco Road schools.
