NC State defeats Old Dominion 38-14
NC State is 3-0.
Clad in their red helmets and red pants the Wolfpack seemed ready to play. They had travelled north for their first road test of the season to take on the Old Dominion Monarchs. By halftime the game was pretty much decided as the Wolfpack defeated the previously undefeated Monarchs 38-14.

The Pack did it in style too. Defensively they faced the nation’s leading rusher in Ray Lowry at 219 yards per game. By the end of the night Lowry had been held to 15 yards on 11 carries for a mere 1.8 yards per rush. ODU as a team was held to -3 yards rushing.
ODU’s opening drive was stopped cold…3 and out.
On the Wolfpack first drive Matt Dayes picked up where he left off the first two games of the season. Quarterback Jacoby Brissett guided a balanced attack as he moved the team methodically downfield mainly on the legs of Dayes. Duel threat Jaylen Samuels would take in on an end around run for the Pack’s first score ending a 15 play, 73-yard drive.

NC STATE 7 – ODU O
The speed of the Wolfpack defensive line was apparent and at times overwhelming to the larger Monarch offense as they were stopped again.
Shadrach Thornton, back from his two-game suspension got his first carry on the Pack’s second possession for an 11 yard burst. Three plays later, Thornton would carry for another 11 yards burst. Unfortunately, on 3rd down, senior quarterback Jacoby Brissett did what a veteran QB should not have. He took a sack for a 12 yard loss forcing the Pack to attempt a long 48 yard field. Freshman kicker Kyle Bambard barely missed the kick to the right.
One of the lone highlights of the evening for ODU came on the next drive when Lowry took a short dump pass from quarterback Shuler Bently and after dodging several Wolfpack defenders, accelerated his way to a 70 yard touchdown.

On the next drive, seemingly pissed, the Pack quickly responded with a 5 play 72-yard drive of their own. Brissett ran an option keeper around the left side for 21 yards to score the touchdown.

NC State would continue its domination of ODU in routing the Norfolk team amassing 435 yards in total offense, while holding ODU to 148 yards.
”Jacoby had a fever and didn’t feel well this morning, but no way are you keeping him off the field,” North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren said. ”He wanted to play no matter what.”
That he did.
In his 3rd season at NC state, Dave Doeren has a 3-0 record and evened his Wolfpack coaching record to 14-14 overall. FINAL: NC State 38 – Old Dominion 14
