The Rimington Award Watch List was released yesterday. The Rimington Award recognizes the best center in the country. There is also the Outland Trophy for linemen, but the point men get special recognition in the form of their own trophy. Unlike the Maxwell and Bednarik fields, the Rimington actually has quite a mix of local talents on its list for one position.

More from Duke Blue Devils

Matt Skura – Duke – RS Senior

Skura has been the point man for the most successful Duke teams in recent years. Now we can watch him work outside of the shadow of current Detroit Lion Laken Tomlinson.

Quinton Schooley – NC State – Senior

Schooley is a center also in the middle of recent success. He will have to anchor a NC State offensive line that will be trying to build on the success of last year.

Lucas Crowley – North Carolina – Junior

Crowley first appeared on the Tar Heel offensive line as a true freshman. He has not been off it since except for injuries. Crowley is the middle of an offensive line that was disappointing for the Tar Heels last year, and so he will have to drag improvement from them.

More from Old North Banter

Jesse Chapman – Appalachian State – Senior

Success for the Mountaineers has been based on running the ball, and running ball requires a good offensive line. These days that includes Chapman in the middle.

The key connecting tissue between all of these guys is the necessity of good line play in order to have sustained success this year. It is quite a tribute that these players have done enough to be recognized among the top centers in the nation. It is a consideration that is mostly made without the luxuries of real stats for these guys.
