This is a great blow to the chances of the Cleveland Cavs in their quest to win an NBA Championship. Of the Big Three that they began the year with, only LeBron James remains. Both Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving were lost in playoff injuries. LeBron scored 44 and took the Warriors to overtime, but the effort ultimately cost him Irving’s knee.

Irving may be irreplaceable to the series. He scored twenty three points to supplement LeBron’s effort. His defensive effort, a question mark, was great as he collected four steals and got two key blocks of Stephen Curry. He performed brilliantly as LeBron’s right hand and that has been cut off.

Look for the Cavs to replace Irving with a handful of lineups. LeBron will likely dominate the ball with Iman Shumpert and JR Smith as his back court. At least that would give the Cavaliers some long arms to chase Curry and fellow splash brother Klay Thompson. Yes, it also means more Matt Delladedova too. More pressure will be put on LeBron James than has occurred up to now.
Irving’s knee injury is listed as a kneecap. This matches comments Irving made earlier about the injury not having to do with his ACL or MCL. He will have surgery on the knee in the coming days. He will be out for two to four months, and should be ready for action by the beginning of next season.
The loss of Irving also means the loss of one more local player. Now it will just be Stephen Curry and Harrison Barnes out there with small chances of seeing Brendan Haywood and James Michael McAdoo.
