The Carolina Panthers have a history with first round picks where when they go right, the team does well. The second is a little more hit and miss. Let’s see if there are any lessons to be learned from twenty years of Carolina Panthers Second Round picks.

Observations:
Drafting receiver in round two:
The Panthers have one big hit and two big misses in drafting receivers. The biggest boon and the biggest bust were prototypical sized guys. Muhsin Muhammad was part of that deep 1996 WR class. He offered a set of skills, like blocking, that made him a great asset for years.
On the other hand Dwayne Jarrett and Keary Colbert turned into big misses. Jarrett particularly was disappointing after his collegiate success. Fortunately the 2007 second round was not a total loss.

Drafting linemen in the second round:
Chris Terry was a pretty good player until leaving the team in free agency. The best hits would seem to be the last ones. Ryan Kalil is an All-Pro center who was a standout at USC. It seems like a tragedy that he was not a first round pick. You can’t hit second rounders harder than Kalil. Look at the recent Pro Bowl rosters.
Amini Silatolu had a really good first season, but he joined the MASH unit last year at times. That means the jury is still out on him, but he looks good when healthy.

Drafting impact:
The second round has provided the Panthers with some of their iconic players. Kris Jenkins was a key lynchpin on the 2003 Super Bowl team. Mike Minter is the only Panther player not named Sam Mills in the Ring of Honor. Michael Rucker was an anchor on the defensive line as well.
Yet it is hard to avoid names like Eric Shelton, Dwayne Jarrett, Jimmy Clausen, and Everette Brown. The round can be lost, and opportunities missed.
The last two years have seen Kawann Short and Kony Ealy. Short is a big player in the middle of the line, while Ealy is part of the DE rotation. Ealy can become more with time, and the loss of Greg Hardy has already justified his selection.
So here we go in just a few hours.
