Hornets spared Wrath of Nick Young AKA Swaggy P

No, Nick Young will not be suiting up for the Los Angeles Lakers tonight as they play the Charlotte Hornets. However he will probably be in street clothes, and the Hornets only play the Lakers twice a year so this is our only real opportunity to talk Nick Young and his nickname ‘Swaggy P.’

More from Charlotte Hornets

Young has gotten plenty of press for his style. He is dating Iggy Azalea. He believes that he should shoot the ball all the time. Yet the thing that gets the most notice is the ‘Swaggy P.’ Young has been evasive about the significance of his nickname. He has answered some queries by simply identifying himself as a ‘swaggy’ individual but that doesn’t really explain the ‘P.’

Does it stand for Person or Principal? Does it stand for Paradise? Young doesn’t say, only hints that one day he may tell us.

  • I think Nick Young has already told us, and it is much stranger than he is letting on.

Young actually has given at least one full account of his nickname. It was on Instagram of all places and reads like this:

“Like God came in a dream, talked to me, and he gave me that name. And I was like, ‘You know what, God? That is a funny name and I might need to run with it.’ And ever since then, I’ve been calling myself ‘Swaggy P.’ It’s a household name now.”

Does it make sense for God to reveal himself to Nick Young? I would tend to think it was unlikely also, if it were not for a battle fought during a Roman civil war in 312 AD.

According to Christian teaching/legend (depending on your religious affiliation), the Roman Emperor Constantine saw a great vision before the Battle of Milvian Bridge in Italy. His vision, coming from God, was of a Chi Ro, the first two letters in the Greek word for Christ. God’s instruction was ‘in this sign, thou shalt conquer’ or something like that. This is what a Chi Ro looks like:

You will note that the Chi Ro is shaped like a P at the top. A very unusual P if one has never seen the Greek Alphabet before. Dare I say that it looks like a Swaggy P.

So with that connection, consider Young’s dream now. God comes to Young as he did to Constantine and gives him the Chi Ro sign as ‘the sign in which thou shall conquer.’ Young, a young person with no experience with Greek letters, takes this to mean that he needs to take this sign as a nickname for himself. Thus Swaggy P was born.

Or maybe something else happened…only Nick Young knows. 🙂

The Hornets at least will be spared any divine empowerment with Nick Young on the bench.
