Former Hornet Anthony Mason Suffering Heart Failure

Former Charlotte Hornets forward Anthony Mason has suffered a heart attack and is “fighting for his life” reports NBA writer Peter Vescey. The problems stem from complications resulting from congestive heart failure. Mason has been through four operations so far including a nine hour marathon.

More from Charlotte Hornets

Mason originally gained basketball notice for being part of Pat Riley’s New York Knicks teams of the early and mid-nineties. His work with the Knicks got him a Sixth Man of the Year award in 1994-5, the year that the Knicks faced the Houston Rockets in the NBA Finals.

Mason was acquired by the Hornets in the Larry Johnson trade, and made that look like a smart deal when the Hornets won 54 games in the 1996-7 season. Mason spent three years in Charlotte, and had some time as a point forward of sorts. He averaged thirteen points and ten rebounds per game while he was here. With the exception of his one season with the Miami Heat, the Hornets years represent the peak of Mason’s career.

  • Mason was traded to the Heat in 2000 in exchange for Jamal Mashburn. He made an All-Star appearance that year, reunited with Pat Riley. Then he played only two more years past that with the Milwaukee Bucks. Mason spent thirteen seasons in the NBA and averaged ten points and eight rebounds over the entire span.

Mason was a big dude at 250 lbs and larger. That seems to have come into play now that Mason has been away from NBA conditioning for twelve years. Hopefully he will recover. His two sons have gone to join him while he fights through this. Anthony Jr is a former St. Johns player in the middle of the last decade. His other son Antoine plays for Bruce Pearl and the Auburn Tigers. Mason can be proud that his two sons got scholarships from schools bigger than Tennessee State, his alma mater.
