One would be remiss to completely bypass Signing Day activity without looking at the East Carolina Pirates. The Pirates brought in a class of seventeen recruits. East Carolina returns eleven starters, but lost some significant pieces to their team. These new guys will part of the solution to replace those guys.

To emphasize the importance of replacing folks right away, Coach Ruffin McNeil did bring three junior college prospects. Offensive lineman Justin Sandifer has the body to play right away on the line. Darius Wright could move into the interior linebacker position in that 3-4. The last junior college guy is former North Carolina signee James Summers, who has morphed from a high school quarterback to big receiver. At 6’3” and 210 lbs, Summers is a big target and possible replacement for departing senior Cam Worthy.

Wide receiver was the most numerous position brought in, which makes sense given the large numbers of wideouts who will play in the Air Raid offense.

Three guys are coming from South Carolina, two from Florida, and two from Georgia. Singlets are coming from Texas and Oklahoma including the only quarterback in the class, John Jacobs.

The Signees were:

Darius Anderson, OL, 6’3” 330 lbs
Tony Baird, LB, 6’3” 210 lbs
Justin Brown, DL, 6’3” 310 lbs
