Devin Thomas’ 24 point effort fails to fell Duke, 65-73
Devin Thomas played a heck of a game for the upset minded Wake Forest Demon Deacons last night as they took on the #2 Duke Blue Devils. Thomas’ 24 points were not enough to drag Wake to victory. Only forward Codi Miller-McIntyre scored in double figures with him, with Cornelius Hudson adding nine more.
Duke just had more guys. In the end, when Thomas had done as much as he could, the Blue Devils had gotten a twenty point game from freshman wing Justise Winslow, a twelve point and eleven rebound game from freshman Jahlil Okafor, and ten points from Rasheed Sulaimon. Wake was ahead in the second half, but Duke senior guard Quinn Cook found his shot and added nine more points and finish with twelve on the night. Cook was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

That is why it is so hard to get a handle on this game. Is it a sign that Wake can make a jump as more teammates contribute around monster games from Thomas? Or is this as much as Thomas can do on his own, meaning that Wake is due for a step back when Thomas runs out of steam?
Wake Forest currently sits at 8-8 on the season and 0-2 in the ACC. Its best win so far was over Richmond on the 28th of December. Wake next plays Georgia Tech at home in another chance to break into the win column in the conference season.

Duke, on the other hand, should be glad to get away with the win here. This was clearly not the best game that the Devils have played this season, but to be good sometimes you have to win ugly. Duke will play its second Tobacco Road opponent in a row when it faces the NC State Wolfpack in Raleigh on January 11.
