Mike Weaver of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons missed three kicks, well four if you count that time that Kendall Fuller was off sides for the Virginia Tech Hokies. Know what? Did not matter. He made two kicks and they ended up being the game winners. Neither occurred during regulation. Wake Forest only scored on Weaver’s two kicks in the overtime periods.

Virginia Tech kicker Joey Slye cannot say the same. After a big stand by the Wake defense to push the Hokies back into a 53 yard kick which Slye missed. Weaver then answered with the thirty-nine yard game winner in the second overtime.

Some people believed this game was an offense to college football everywhere. This was a defensive showdown, and the Wake Forest defense was up to the challenge against the young Virginia Tech offensive line. Virginia Tech lost two fumbles and each side threw an interception.

Wake Forest’s offense could do no better than getting into formation for two missed field goals though.
Virginia Tech fell to 5-6 on the season and will need a victory against rival Virginia next week to make it to a bowl game. That game got considerably tougher as Virginia beat Miami tonight. This means that Virginia-Virginia Tech becomes a loser leave town match with the winner going to a bowl game and the loser waiting for spring practice. It is just another day in the ACC Coastal Division.

Wake Forest will finish their season next week in their annual cross division rivalry against the Duke Blue Devils. The Demon Deacons will only be playing for pride, whereas Duke will be trying to protect their bowl position.
