Marcus Cox Runs the Cajuns: App wins 35-16

What do you do to follow up giving Marcus Cox forty carries in one game? Give him thirty six carries in the next! Watch him run for 151 yards and two touchdowns. Then surround him with more offense and throw in a kick return touchdown for Bobo Beathard. Is that enough to beat the reigning champions of the Sun Belt Conference.

More from Appalachian State Mountaineers

Answer, yes. Other than Cox, App State scored on big plays to hold off the Ragin Cajuns of Louisiana-Lafayette. There was a forty yard pass to receiver Montez McGuire in the third quarter. There was also a thirty-six yard run by Terrence Upshaw.

The Cajuns took a 14-3 deficit and then dominated the second quarter to make the game more even at 14-13 at half. That was as close as it got. Alonzo Harris and Elijah McGuire’s impact on the field was minimal and they were the key of the Cajun offense. The Cajuns were constantly forced into situations where they had to abandon the run.

  • That makes this game one of the best performances of the App State defense all year. Louisiana-Lafayette had little trouble scoring all year until this game. They held the Cajuns to 2.8 yards per rush and yet never took the ball away from the Cajuns.

All this means that App State’s team finally came together. The took down the Sun Belt’s three power players in the last three weeks. They sit at five wins with a chance at bowl eligibility next week against the Idaho Vandals. Likely that bowl bid will not come, but you can talk of it. It is now impossible to describe this year as a lost season, and has to be looked at as a success. Go Mountaineers!!
