Adam Silver Nails Jeff Taylor Punishment Process

Man, Adam Silver is continuing to crush being the NBA commissioner with his handling of the Jeff Taylor domestic violence dispute. Taylor pled guilty in late October to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge and a malicious destruction of property of charge.

How Silver has handled in this so quietly and thoroughly in the age of Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson is something by itself. Yes, Taylor is a tenth man on the current Hornets if he were playing so he does not have notoriety of either Rice or Panthers end Greg Hardy.

The NBA actually said they would look at their domestic violence policies in light of what was happening to the NFL. Taylor simply allowed us to see if they would practice what they preached. They seem to be following through.

Taylor was sentenced to a year and a half probation, six months of domestic violence intervention training, alcohol treatment and random alcohol testing, and eighty hours of community service. Completion of this package would dismiss his charge.

Taylor was additionally suspended for a quarter of the NBA season. Taylor has been on paid leave for the Hornets by agreement up til now. He will now have to pay the league for the eleven games he has already missed but received pay for. He will miss the next thirteen games, and then become available. Taylor will also meet with an NBA appointed counselor.

  • The NBA looks much better than the NFL through this situation. There has been no crisis, many people were consulted, and anybody can read the commissioner’s statement to see what the NBA is trying to do here. It is a good mix of private management and public transparency.
    The NFL by comparison has muddled the Rice situation to death by leaving it in the hands of one man who clearly did not have a strategy other ‘hope this goes away.’ The fact that Rice is appealing their punishment of him on grounds that they acted poorly is proof of that.
