AAC Championship Race- 11/18

facebooktwitterreddit

Last Week saw one of the big matchups in the AAC Championship race come down hard. East Carolina was essentially eliminated from the conference title by losing to Cincinnati in a game where Shane Carden threw for more than 400 yards. That is just disgusting. That is the only battle of heavyweights to sort out in the American Athletic Conference.

More from East Carolina Pirates

Memphis still has only a couple of weaker opponents left on the schedule. They get to avoid Cincy and UCF. Cincy and UCF also get to avoid each other. It is still possible for a team with three losses to claim a share of the championship, but it is very unlikely.

American Athletic Conference Standings

1.Memphis Tigers (5-1)
2.Cincinnati Bearcats (4-1)
3.UCF Knights (4-1)
4.East Carolina Pirates (3-2)
5.Houston Cougars (3-2)
6.Temple Owls (3-3)
7.South Florida Bulls (3-3)

There are four other teams in the conference, but they are all mathematically eliminated at this point.

Team most likely to fall out of contention:
Houston will likely lose on the road to Cincy and pick up its third loss. South Florida faces UCF and Memphis and losing just one of those would knock them out. Temple will probably go down to Cincinnati this week to take them out of contention. Ultimately the second loss will hold back East Carolina.

  • Teams most likely to peak their heads above the crowd:
I still like Memphis to finish out with the single loss, even though I do not believe that they are the strongest team amongst the contenders. The team I see right there with them at the end would be Cincy. The Bearcats also don’t have a lot of barriers, and they get Houston at home.

Still there is a lot that could happen. Next year the conference should have enough members for a title game and that will be exciting.
