Ross Martin’s kick fails to sink Hokies 17-16
If you are trying to win a game on a forty yard kick, you’d probably want the all time leading scorer in Duke Blue Devils football history to attempt it. Well, down 17-16 in the fourth quarter, the Duke Blue Devils did just that by sending out Ross Martin to beat the Virginia Tech Hokies. He missed the kick, not by a Beamerball block, he just missed it. Then Duke fell to 4-2 and needing to win both games left on their schedule to win the Coastal Division.

Part of that story was written by Georgia Tech and Clemson, where the Yellow Jackets knocked out DeShaun Watson and then knocked out the Tigers to finish in the clubhouse at 6-2 for the conference. Duke owns tie-breakers against the Jackets, but a loss to North Carolina or Wake Forest would doom Duke to a mere bowl game.
This game was dominated by the defenses. Duke lost the turnover battle 3-2 to the Hokies, and Hokies quarterback Michael Brewer threw one really nice touchdown pass and one really lucky touchdown pass.
Duke’s defense gave Brewer plenty of pressure with seven sacks on the day.
Most of the Hokies’ dirty work was done in the fourth quarter as the Hokies scored ten unanswered points to come back from a 16-7 deficit.

Busting Brackets
The Blue Devils will probably fall out of the polls and the consideration for the college football playoff poll. Their game against the Tar Heels becomes a must win for their championship hopes. The team will have to demonstrate some desperation. No doubt the Tar Heels will be hungry for the chance to gain bowl eligibility.
The Virginia Tech Hokies are now a win away from going to a bowl game going into a matchup with Wake Forest. The ACC might actually send enough teams to bowls to fulfil the bowl bid obligations.
