Arguably, the best way to win a game is to put the ball into the hands of your best player and turn him loose. As good as Taylor Lamb has been for Appalachian State, everyone wants to see Marcus Cox continue the fireworks he started as a freshman. Cox, or Count Dacula, had a pretty quiet early season for the Mountaineers but had had come on lately. He was a big part of the bloated stat line against Georgia State two weeks ago.

More from Appalachian State Mountaineers

Today he was the stat line. He got the ball forty times and ran for 230 yards with it. He got into the end zone twice. In an up and down game with another spread team, the Mountaineers needed a constant like Cox to attack the Red Wolves defense and keep the offense on the field.

Half time saw App down 20-13, but the third quarter was the playground of the App offense. First they tied the game and then continued a string of 24 unanswered points to have a 37-20 with only four minutes remaining. Arkansas State gave the comeback a good try and scored twice in that four minute period before the clock ran out on them and the game ended 37-34.

  • Arkansas State quarterback Fredi Knighten was not the force that he needed to be on the grund. He did throw for three scores, but that was late. One Arkansas State score was a punt return for a touchdown in the first half. Their offense never really generated as advertised during the game.

Appalachian State should be proud, as they have knocked off one of the historical big boys of the Sun Belt Conference. The Red Wolves had more to play for in this game too, as they are now out of the Sun Belt Conference race. The Mountaineers go on to face preseason conference favorite Ragin Cajuns on the road next week.
