Week 12 College Football Playoff Rankings Released: Duke #21

The latest college football playoff rankings came out yesterday and we were presented with some ideas that the committee is considering right now. The clearest thing that seems to be going on is that the Pac 12 will have a team in the final pool. The committee has set it up so that the Arizona State vs Oregon matchup in the Pacific 12 Championship will decide one of the spots.

The second thing to notice is that Florida State’s unbeaten record is not the be all end all of the discussion. The Seminoles moved behind Oregon this week. This keeps them in the three spot, but it could set up a move to take the Seminoles out of the discussion entirely with a loss to Miami. Oh, and Miami can win that game.

The TCU Horned Frogs ascended to the fourth spot over Alabama. I think this was done because the committee was going to rank TCU in front of Baylor anyway, and putting them in front of Alabama defuses the head-to-head matchup issue. Again, the only real poll that matters is the last one.

    • The Duke Blue Devils, on the other hand, are still not taken seriously by the playoff committee because they are still buried in the twenties of this poll. This would seem to make it unlikely that Duke could ascend all the way up the ladder to the playoff. If Florida State does not hold serve, the Atlantic Coast Conference will not have any representatives in the final playoff standings.

    Of the teams not named Alabama that could jump into the final four, the one to watch is the Ohio State Buckeyes since they are the one team that projects to be a champion not in the four. We will have to see if Urban Meyer opens up the margin of victory.
