Week 12 Amway Coaches Poll: Duke #19

I guess I was rooting for chaos and I almost go it. Alabama beat LSU in overtime and retained their number 3 position in this poll. TCU is currently sitting on top of Baylor, but Baylor beat TCU. For the polls, this is okay, but the playoff committee will likely rank Baylor over TCU for consideration. Let’s see what else is happening in the Week 12 Amway Coaches Poll.

There are two developments going on in the poll for the North Carolina area teams. The Duke Blue Devils continue to rise in the polls with their 8-1 season and the teams around them all have more losses. They are now at number 19. Duke will continue to rise, but they probably have a ceiling that would keep them out of the playoff. The exception would be if they blew out Florida State in the ACC Championship game, which does not seem that reasonable to an outside observer.

Notre Dame lost to Arizona State and so lost some of its luster as an ACC resume booster. The Fighting Irish also likely lost their bid for the playoff with their second loss.

Two no Power Five teams are lurking in the bottom of the poll in the forms of Colorado State at 25 and Marshall at 21. This shows how far East Carolina’s backdoor chances to get to the alliance bowl game are. Rules state that it must be a champion, so rooting for a Mountain West or Conference USA challenger may be the only way.
