CBS Sports Basketball Experts pick Charlotte Hornets to a 7 Seed

I don’t know what expected when I flipped on the CBS Sports Basketball experts take on the season, but there was a lot there I did not expect to see. Like three of the four guys taking the Los Angeles Clippers to win it all. Two guys went for LeBron as MVP, but two others went for different Clippers. Matt Moore of CBS Sports took Wake Forest alum Chris Paul as his man for MVP. Then there was what they said about the Charlotte Hornets.

More from Charlotte Hornets

This fits with what I said about Paul earlier. The Clippers are expected to treat the season without the huge weight of Donald Sterling and excel. If someone thing big has to be done, Steve Balmer will likely do it. More likely LA is trendy because the Thunder are hurt and the Spurs may finally be too old. Can we ever say that about the Spurs?

Duke’s Jabari Parker got three votes for Rookie of the Year. Parker will be the offensive centerpiece of the Milwaukee Bucks and should collect plenty of stats. That seems to be what wins the ROY race most years. See Carter-Williams, Michael.

  • Charlotte coach Steve Clifford got one pick for Coach of the Year and all of the experts had the Hornets in the playoffs. Of the three experts who revealed their final playoff brackets, the Hornets were eliminated in the first round in two of them. James Hebert gave the Hornets the 5 seed and an upset first round playoff victory over the Atlanta Hawks. The other two had the Hornets at the 7 seed and a first round exit at the hand of LeBron.

My gut tells me that this does not feel quite right. I am much more comfortable with Hebert’s prediction than the other two. The Southeastern Division is going to be a slaughter pen for whomever comes out, the divisional winner may have the weakest number of wins. So the Hornets at the 4 or 5 seed is about where I would put them. I say this without seeing what the Heat will do without James. I could easily envision a scenario where the Raptors win more games with an inferior team to the Southeastern contenders.
