Duke Blue Devils Upend Virginia, 20-13

The Duke Blue Devils were in a dogfight all day with the Virginia Cavaliers. At the end of the day, Duke was rewarded in becoming bowl eligible for the third year in a row and taking over first place in the Coastal Division. Sure there are several teams at (2-1) in the ACC Coastal, but Duke has to have the belt for beating undefeated conference opponents in two straight weeks.

More from Duke Blue Devils

It was a good hard game against the Virginia Cavaliers where sophomore quarterback Matt Johns filled up the stat sheet for UVA. He had 325 yards and a touchdown and found his man senior receiver Miles Gooch for 128 yards and Darius Jennings for 79 more.

This was a game where the scoring was done by the unappreciated guys. Whether it was Erich Schneider and David Reeves for Duke or Khalek Shepherd for UVA, this was the time of the underdog.

Play of the Game

In the middle of the fourth quarter, Anthony Boone led the Blue Devils down the field. He was pulled for Thomas Sirk once it was first and goal. Virginia assumed Sirk was there to run it in like the wildcat formation. Sirk hiked it, took two steps forward, stopped, and then threw the Tim Tebow jump pass to tight end David Reeves.

    Were You There When…

They printed the stat sheet. Duke had a rather unimpressive statistical game. Virginia outgained them by more than a hundred yards. Boone’s passing numbers were average, only getting 181 passing yards. No Duke running back had made more than 70 rushing yards. Only senior receiver Jamison Crowder had a notable game receiving with 99 yards.

    Final Thoughts

Duke is now in great position with six wins overall and 2-1 in conference. The Coastal Division is wide open, particularly when North Carolina beat Georgia Tech later in the day. Duke has as good position as anyone to make its move. Duke gets a bye this week and then goes to Pittsburgh the week after.
