The weapon of choice was a rejuvenated Appalachian State rushing attack. The Mountaineers had four rushers over eighty yards of rushing. Sophomore running back Marcus Cox had 119 yards on 15 carries and three touchdowns. Terrence Upshaw had eighty-two yards on 11 carries. Quarterback Taylor Lamb had ninety-eight yards rushing on eight carries and a touchdown. Finally Ricky Ferguson came on the scene with 104 yards on nine carries. This was the best rushing day App had all season, suggesting that they took that lesson from the Liberty game to heart.
App’s defense allowed the first touchdown of the game, but then denied any points to the Trojans after that. The remaining Trojan score was a kickoff return by receiver Chandler Worthy.
Play of the Game
With 9:15 in the first quarter, Taylor Lamb launched a 59 yard pass and run to Malachi Jones for the touchdown that responded to Troy’s first score. It was a moment where App showed that they could score on this Troy defense at will if they just put forward the effort.

App scored a safety right before the half. It was definitely a freak play late in the second quarter. The Mountaineers were driving for the end zone and Taylor Lamb threw a pass to Montez McGuire. McGuire fumbled the ball near the goal line and the ball came out. Troy’s Mark Wilson recovered the ball and then was tackled in the end zone for a safety giving App a 26-14 lead at the half.
Final Thoughts
Appalachian State got their first victory over a FBS foe and a Sun Belt foe as a FBS member of the Sun Belt Conference. It was not just winning though, it was how they won. They won going away, proving that they belong in this league. If this running attack can continue to flourish, then App should have the opportunity to pick up a few more conference wins before the season is over.
