More from Appalachian State Mountaineers

The Appalachian State Mountaineers are still looking for redemption, and now they have a crushing loss to Liberty to add to the fire as they go down the road to play Troy this week. Troy is also 1-5 with a victory over New Mexico State last weekend. The Trojans represent as good a chance as any for App State to break this losing streak. Can the Mountaineers find the way forward?

Date: October 18

Venue: Veterans Memorial Stadium (Troy, AL)

Last Time: 2000

The last game between Troy and Appalachian State was when they were both Division 1-AA members. They met in the first round of the 2000 playoffs where App State avenged a regular season to the Trojans.

Troy has had to answer a number of the same questions that Appalachian State has had to answer. They are playing behind a new quarterback, Brandon Silvers, who is still growing into the position. Silvers has been relying on wide receiver Chandler Worthy to make plays. Worthy was named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the week for his performance against New Mexico State.

The Troy defense has been the real question mark. It has given up 48 to UAB, 66 to Georgia, and 34 to Duke. The last two weeks have the seen the defense improve against the rather slow offense of Louisiana-Monroe and an outmatched New Mexico State team. The Appalachian State offense has playing closer to the last two than the first three.

If there is an x factor in this game, then it has to be coaching. Larry Blakeney has lots of experience playing in the Sun Belt and playing big games. If someone is going to pull a rabbit out of a hat it will probably be him.

Prediction:

If this were in Boone, I would probably go the other way. I need App State to show me something. The offense at least was clicking last week. Can they keep that up? My feeling is not yet.
