Appalachian State Mountaineers vs Liberty Flames Preview

It has been a tough go so far the Appalachian State Mountaineers. After five weeks of play, they have one win over non-scholarship Campbell to show for it. Losses to conference rivals Georgia Southern and South Alabama really were not close. Looks like it is time to hit the reset button. A whole new season starts this week with the Liberty Flames. The Flames are not an FBS squad, but they are an opportunity for the Mountaineers to reestablish what they do on offense and defense.

More from Appalachian State Mountaineers

That does not mean Liberty will go quietly in some sort of glorified scrimmage. The Flames have been playing tough this season, and will likely be looking forward to this game as their final chance to take on an FBS team after their 56-24 turn in Chapel Hill.

Date: October 11

Time: 3:30 PM

TV: ESPN3

Venue: Kidd-Brewer Stadium

Last Time: 2002

22. 2382. 29. 2391. Final

The last meeting between App State and Liberty was before the modern App State spread offense era. Therefore the result does not have much to teach us.

Opponent: Liberty Flames (3-3)

Liberty is on a two game losing streak at the moment. Coach Turner Gill’s squad was suppressed by the Indiana State Sycamores two weeks ago and battled regional rival Richmond to a double-overtime thriller. The Flames are also ready to get back to some winning ways before hitting the meat of their Big South schedule.

Turner Gill is devoted to his option spread variant, though he has been getting good mileage out of quarterback Josh Woodrum’s arm. Woodrum has thrown for over 1500 yards and 11 touchdowns this year. This puts him on pace to break his season statistics from last year if this keeps up.

Prediction:

31. 2391. Final. 20. 2382

Come on. It’s Homecoming in Boone, do really think that Taylor Lamb and the boys are going to fall flat on their faces on homecoming? The App fans deserve far more than that. Liberty is a clear step up from Campbell, but not quite Southern Miss, which is why I have the score where I do.
