Appalachian State Mountaineers Stunned by South Alabama Jaguars 47-21
I went 0-2 for defending home teams when the Appalachian State Mountaineers lost to South Alabama Jaguars 47-21.
Which joke should I make: “A Bridge Too Far” perhaps? Well I think Brandon Bridge told a lot of people that he was going to enjoy his one year as the starting quarterback for South Alabama. 339 passing yards and 3 touchdowns later, and I am still scratching my head at this one. South Alabama looked more like the preseason number 3 Sun Belt pick than the team that got beat by Georgia Southern. I just wonder if any App State fans wondered whether or not Taylor Lamb should have gone to South Alabama after all.

Just kidding. Lamb did not play a bad game, but the Appalachian offense was once again shut down by the opposing defense, including those Jaguar linemen I had discounted.
Play of the Game
Bridge threw a 67 yard pass to wide receiver Shavarez Smith for a score that made the score 20-0 and probably put the game too far for the Appalachian State offense to get it. The Jaguars would pile it on in the third quarter, with three more touchdowns to end all doubt at 40-7.

Were You There When…
Kameron Bryant came in the game. It was clear before then, but Bryant’s replacement of Lamb was the true sign that the game was over. From that point on App was playing for pride. App outscored the Jaguars 14-7 in the fourth quarter. Lamb threw for two scores and will be the quarterback next week.
Final Thoughts
Based on preseason ratings, this is the South Alabama team that the experts were looking for. Why they had to show up yesterday is uncertain. It seems App still has a lot to iron out on the offensive side of the ball. The Mountaineers are probably glad to see the Liberty Flames on the schedule next week.
